OGF23 is the largest and most important event taking place this year that will feature an extensive community program for all those interested in learning about Grid and distributed computing technologies. During the week, participants can choose from numerous sessions, workshops, seminars, keynote presentations and tutorials being offered by OGF and our event partners OGF-Europe and BEinGrid.

Keynotes

Les Robertson

Les Robertson has been involved in the development and management of the central computing services at CERN , the European Organization for Nuclear Research, since 1974, taking a very active part in the evolution from super-computers through general purpose mainframes to clusters of RISC workstations and finally (at least for now) to PC-based computing fabrics. He was involved from an early stage in planning the data handling services for the experiments that will use CERN's new accelerator - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The very large volume of data and computing capacity requirements led to an early interest in Computational and Data Grids - which are now enabling us to unite the power of the many large and small computing clusters available to high energy physicists, integrating them with storage facilities at CERN and other data centres distributed around the world. He led the LHC Computing Grid Project for six years from its start in 2001 with the goal of preparing the computing environment for LHC: the development and support of the common tools, libraries and frameworks required by the physics applications, the preparation of the computing facility at CERN, and the coordination and operation of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid.

Mário Campolargo

Mario Compolargo is Acting Director in the European Commission, DG INFSO/F "Emerging Technologies and Infrastructures", while he maintains his specific responsibilities as Head of Unit "GÉANT & e-Infrastructure�. Mário Campolargo has been heavily involved in launching this pioneering concept of e Infrastructure in Europe, a responsibility pursued currently in the context of the Research Infrastructure (RI) part of the “Capacities� Programme of the Seventh Framework Programme. In this context Mário Campolargo has been responsible for an implementation strategy at EU level that includes the continuous enhancement of the high speed research network GÉANT, the deployment of pan-European Grid infrastructures to serve the needs of multiple research communities as well as the deployment of grids of supercomputers. The deployment of scientific data infrastructures and the implementation of a European strategy towards petaflop computing is one of his current challenges.

Werner Vogels

Dr. Werner Vogels is Vice President & Chief Technology Officer at Amazon.com where he is responsible for driving the company's technology vision, which is to continuously enhance the innovation on behalf of Amazon's customers at a global scale. Prior to joining Amazon, he worked as a researcher at Cornell University where he was a principal investigator in several research projects that target the scalability and robustness of mission-critical enterprise computing systems. He has held positions of VP of Technology and CTO in companies that handled the transition of academic technology into industry. Vogels holds a Ph.D. from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and has authored many articles for journals and conferences, most of them on distributed systems technologies for enterprise computing.

In addition, OGF-Europe’s program includes a Digital Repositories seminar, a session on Grid Economics and Business Models, and several tutorials.

BEinGRID Industry Days will offer numerous case studies of grids deployments in over a dozen commercial sectors. These case studies will be supplemented by actual demonstrations of these deployments and the applications which leverage them.
