The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is creating an online reference source and database for every one of the 1.8 million species that are named and known on this planet to be used as both a teaching and a learning tool, helping scientists, educators, students, and the community at large gain a better understanding of this planet and all who inhabit it. The project is a major, major undertaking. To date, nowhere is there a comprehensive database of each and every species described. The crucial software tools to accomplish it, including accumulation of content, have only demonstrated their effectiveness on a large scale in the last year or two.
With a project of this magnitude, standards will play a key role in enabling scalability and expanded participation. This talk will give an introduction to the problems faced by EOL, and address the need for standards across it, including meta data, naming and taxonomy, interfaces to data providers, and others.
