Cloud Computing, Grids and the Coming IT Cambrian Explosion
Irving Wladawsky-Berger
Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology
Visiting Professor of Engineering Systems, MIT
The continuing advances in all aspects of information technology, including the Internet and Grid Computing, as well as the adoption of open standards, is giving rise to the emergence of very powerful IT infrastructures with the ability to deliver huge numbers of consumer and business services as well as to access, analyze and respond in real time to huge amounts of information. Cloud computing - as these new virtual IT infrastructures are generally referred to, are being built out of very standard computing and storage components - 100,000s going to millions, and will connect to billions of user devices and sensors, as well as to existing IT infrastructures and other kinds of platforms. This talk will explore the opportunities, as well as the huge challenges we face in order to realize the full potential of Cloud Computing.
Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger retired from IBM in May, 2007 where he was Vice President of Technical Strategy and Innovation. He was responsible for identifying emerging technologies and marketplace developments critical to the future of the IT industry, and organizing appropriate activities in and outside IBM in order to capitalize on them. In conjunction with that, he led a number of key innovation-oriented activities and formulates technology strategy and public policy positions in support of them. He was also responsible for the IBM Academy of Technology and the company’s university relations office. He will continue to be involved with IBM on a part time basis. Dr. Wladawsky-Berger is Visiting Professor of Engineering Systems at MIT’s Engineering Systems Division, and Adjunct Professor in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at the Imperial College Business School.
