Using grid techniques to optimise energy efficiency (1/2)

With rising energy prices and growing concern about global warming, the question of energy efficiency has become a major concern for the ICT industry. This workshop will specifically address the extent to which grid mechanisms and techniques can capture and implement policies to enable more efficient use of IT resources, with a particular emphasis on data centres and desktop grids.
A specific aim of the workshop is to kickstart activity in this area. Such activities might include experiments that will measure actual performance, the development of scheduling algorithms for minimising total energy use, improvement of techniques for modelling energy efficiency, the specification of appropriate policy frameworks, or standardised formats for monitoring of and accounting for energy consumption.
The organisers believe the OGF has an opportunity to engage positively in the transition to energy-efficient computing. With its experience in the areas of scheduling, grid accounting, usage records and information models, the OGF is well placed to begin work on energy-aware management of task allocation and infrastructure management.
We plan to fill 2 of OGF’s 90-minute sessions. The first session will set out the challenges that need to be addressed, along with current work on modelling and managing energy use of IT infrastructure. This will primarily consist of presentations to provide background.
The second session will concentrate on possible solutions and the steps that will be required to achieve them. It will include presentations of existing OGF activities that may be relevant, such as usage records, information models and task scheduling. There will be plenty of time for discussion and networking.
Speakers will represent organisations and activities including Grid Computing Now!, the British Computer Society, the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres, OGF working groups and other interested parties from industry and academia.
We have some speakers confirmed and several potential speakers in mind. We will confirm the line-up shortly.
