Recently a number of initiatives promoted the definition of development or research roadmaps or agendas for the development of software in the context of the European Research Area.
The session is divided in two parts. The first (Roadmaps Concertation) aims at providing a place for the roadmaps and agendas developers to present their vision, the second part (Community Collaboration Process) is structured to allow each attendee to contribute to identify points of collaboration, to define common strategies and future activities within OGF and/or in other EU institutional places.
In Europe a number of initiatives have recently promoted different and often complementary approaches to the future of software and services development. Each of them has defined its own research roadmaps or agendas bringing together the best expertise and competences from different environments (Research, IT Industries, Telecoms etc) identifying common needs and barriers for the development of the next generation software able to serve the evolving society.
In this context Grid technology and standardisation efforts plays a key role. Several analysts (e.g. Gartner, IDM, the451Group, just to cite a few) consider Grids will mature in the next five years, and current evolutions allow us to consider Grids as the future IT architecture of the Knowledge Society.
The workshop is divided in three parts.
The first two (Roadmaps Concertation) aims at providing a place for the roadmaps and agendas developers to present their vision. In this part different initiatives will contribute by presenting their perspective, the work at the basis of these roadmaps or Strategic Research Agendas (SRAs) and a detailed plan for implementing them.
Four initiatives have been invited to contribute:
- NESSI-Grid, a support action, promoted by the NESSI ETP members (www.nessi-europe.eu) aiming at identifying business requirements of new IT architectures and promoting an agenda with research topics achievable in short, medium and long term.
- Challengers , a Specific Support Action aiming to provide the European Vision of Grid-based platforms and services for the coming decade as well as the Research Agenda and Roadmap for the implementation of this vision.
- ECHOGRID, an international cooperation initiative whose objective is to provide place for cooperation between EU and China on grid interoperability and standardisation.
- CoreGrid Network of Excellence (NoE) aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies
- 3S, an initiative that developed a Joint European White Paper for R&D and Industry in the Service and Software Architectures, Infrastructures and Engineering field.
- the EU Grid Architecture Technical Working Group (TG1) focuses on architectural challenges from the FP5, FP6 and FP7 EU projects.
- The NEXOF-RA project, aiming at identifying common reference architecture for the future service based Economy in EU.
The third part (Community Collaboration Process) is structured to allow each attendee to contribute to identify points of collaboration, to define common strategies and future activities within OGF and/or in other EU institutional organisations.
