OGF23 Welcome and Les Robertson Keynote (90 mins)
Julie Wulf-Knoerzer, Chris Smith, Nick Werstiuk, Geoffrey Fox

OGF Director of Operations, Julie Wulf-Knoerzer, will welcome the audience to OGF23. Chris Smith, Nick Werstiuk and Geoffrey Fox, representing Standards, Enterprise and eScience Functions respectively, will give a brief overview of the highlights of the week, and introduce the opening keynote presenter, Les Robertson from CERN.

Les Robertson has been involved in the development and management of the central computing services at CERN , the European Organization for Nuclear Research, since 1974. He was involved from an early stage in planning the data handling services for the experiments that will use CERN's new accelerator - the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The very large volume of data and computing capacity requirements led to an early interest in Computational and Data Grids - which are now enabling us to unite the power of the many large and small computing clusters available to high energy physicists, integrating them with storage facilities at CERN and other data centres distributed around the world. He led the LHC Computing Grid Project for six years from its start in 2001 with the goal of preparing the computing environment for LHC: the development and support of the common tools, libraries and frameworks required by the physics applications, the preparation of the computing facility at CERN, and the coordination and operation of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid.
