Data grid concepts including “shared collections and “shared resources have been useful to create inter-continental data grids for several large-scale projects. However, users, open source developers and data storage vendors currently have no standard that takes advantage of these data grid concepts.

Users and their applications in collaborative environments need more functionalities and operations than traditional file system interfaces. For example users need to replicate, or perform a structured query on files based on their meta-data (or data). These functionalities are not possible using the traditional file system interface. The concepts used in traditional file systems make the similar interfaces unsuitable for users of collaborative data management. Data grid concepts of “shared collections and “shared resources provide a logical namespace that make the physical distribution transparent to users. Traditional file systems on the other hand, provide a namespace that totally hides the physical distribution of data. In a distributed environment, physical location is needed for several operations such as replication, migration and site-based access.

Due to the fundamental difference in concepts, a client interface for data grids is different from the traditional file systems. We hope to form a standard client interface for data grids in this DGMS-WG. We hope to achieve this as a community based software that will lead to a standard specification. In addition to helping users with a standard client, we will also provide a standard server side interface. This server side interface will help data storage vendors and open source developers to provide a server interface on top of their existing products. This file global namespace effort is proposed to work along with the similar standardization efforts at SNIA.

Agenda:
- Introduction to the need for DG-WG
- - Problem solved, scope
- - Complementary to other OGF and SNIA efforts
- Developer/Vendor Perspective
- User perspective
- Standardization Perspectives
- Discuss draft mission statement and statement of work.
