The 23rd Open Grid Forum - OGF23
June 2-6, 2008
Barcelona, Spain

Thursday, June 5
11:00 am - 12:30 pm
BEinGRID: Finance and Grid (90 mins)
Ioane Muni-Toke (Ecole Centrale Paris)

Grid technologies can bring significant advantages and room for innovation in core banking activities. The objective of this session is to give an overview of the context, the challenges and the solutions brought by this new technology in the financial sector.

Banks are facing an exponential grow of their computation needs. They are facing increasing product and model complexity, increasing volumes to process for scenario simulation and daily reports. In order to cope with these needs, banks are now shifting from super computers to Grid solutions made of standardised and commoditised platforms, in order to easily scale resources along with reasonable investments.

"Experiences with Grid Solutions for the Financial Sector"

The starting point to evaluate the investment in grid technology is to have a development architecture available that allows work distribution thanks to parallelization in small work units, which can be executed on big infrastructures (Host, AIX, Solaris,...) or can be distributed to medium-small, lower cost infrastructures (Intel...).

This speech aims to review the natural flow of the organizations to adopt grid technology.

"Financial Portfolio Management"

Over the past decades, portfolio management techniques have adapted to increasingly complex financial instruments and risk scenarios. The rapid growth of financial markets has intensified concerns about reliably measuring financial instrument risk exposure. Today, financial operators focus on developing reliable techniques for measuring profitability and risks. One of the biggest challenges is the surge in data volumes that have to be manipulated. To face this challenge, brokers need a complete risk and evaluation infrastructure at their fingertips, which implies systems and data, elaborated through new technological solutions. The aim of the experiment is to design and implement a prototype tool, running simulations on a Grid infrastructure, to support financial institutes in strategic decisions of financial portfolio management problems.

“Grid 2.0 : Entering the new age of Grid in Financial Services

Grid Computing technologies have been widely deployed in the FS industry to solve computationnal intensive problems like VaR, PNL Analysis. While this topology of applications will keep driving the demand for this paradigm, the industry is now looking toward solving two other classes of problems: Real-Time / Low Latency applications & improving the overall Grid infrastructure utilization through an effective and predictable infrastructure.

Platform Computing will offer in this session a unique angle to support large organizations to achieve their business target while fullfilling the core Grid prophecy.
