This BoF has as main objective to share and explore with the GGF community the need for a "Certification Process for Grid and Distributed Software", and eventually create durable links in this area.

Here is a bit of background. The ETICS project "The Grid Quality Process" (www.eu-etics.org), is deploying a build and test service, which targets Grid and distributed software project. The key features of the service are to provide a platform for automatic build and test of complex software (both middleware and application level software) on a wide variety of platforms and deployment contexts. Under the hood, ETICS leverages Grid middleware (via NMI and Condor) in order to automate the match-making and job execution. Further, during the build and test jobs, a report engine will gather key metrics, which users will be able to track through time.

This type of service could play an important role in implementing a sound quality assurance process, which could help improving inter-operability of Grid middleware services as well as applications relying on those. The service will also provide tighter control over external dependencies, such that we can better detect version conflicts and better control how to deploy and configure products.

Another important goal of this project is to define a "certification process", which would provide a quality label on Grid and distributed software, holding such certificate.

The goal of this BoF is to share the vision of the project with the community. More specifically, we would like to gather requirements for metrics such a service should gather and track, as well as gather further requirements from the GGF development community, and finally explore what should a certification process entail, in order to improve the quality of the Grid.

Agenda:
Presentations:
- ETICS
- gLite (EGEE m/w) build, integration and certification
- NMI (TBD)
- EU-OMII (TBD)

Discussion topics on:
- Is a certification process needed? And if so, what should it be
- If one is needed, how can we put it in place
