Evolutions of GRIDs Towards Service Oriented Knowledge Utilities (SOKUs) (1/2)

The trend to new distributed architectures that spawn within and across communities, companies and end-users is inevitable considering the past and current interest in Grids, SoA, P2P, Web 2.0 etc. The positioning of enterprise and scientific needs in alignment with standards development in OGF and international research projects is still challenging. The European Expert Group on Next Generation Grids coined the term SOKU – Service Oriented Knowledge Utility – to highlight the need of convergence between the different perspectives in an end-user perspective. This workshop and plenary session brings together key stakeholders from enterprise, science, and standards development. The goal is to show-case the individual expectations, identify challenges, and give views on current and future directions.
A key objective for OGF is the bridging of technological advances in enterprise as well as in scientific environments towards the broad adoption of Grid technology. To this end, the work on relevant standards needs a common technical roadmap to tackle key challenges. The views on the future of distributed systems might exhibit different approaches and timelines in standardization, enterprises and science. However, these differences are not always clear; moreover, there is the common understanding that convergence is inevitable for success.
The term SOKU – Service Oriented Knowledge Utility – has been established in the current European research programs to reflect this convergence by Grids and SoA architectures for broad application as knowledge delivery platforms in enterprises, eScience, and public bodies with a clear impact on economic and social benefit.
Recently, the European Network of Excellence CoreGRID (http://www.coregrid.eu/) reached an agreement on the following definition: a Grid is “a fully distributed, dynamically reconfigurable, scalable and autonomous infrastructure to provide location independent, pervasive, reliable, secure and efficient access to a coordinated set of services encapsulating and virtualizing resources (computing power, storage, instruments, data, etc.) in order to generate knowledge”. This definition is perfectly in line with the main results contained in the EC NGG3 Expert Group report (http://cordis.europa.eu/ist/grids/ngg.htm) about possible evolutions of GRIDs towards Service Oriented Knowledge Utilities (SOKUs).
As a consequence, there is the conviction that the great majority of complex software applications will, in the future, be dynamically built by composing atomic entities (components, services) which will be available in an open market of services and resources. In this sense, the Grid might be conceived as a “world-wide cyber-utility” populated by self-? cooperating and semantic based services which interact as in a complex and gigantic electronic ecosystem.
This OGF workshop intends to initiate a technical discussion about this vision allowing the exchange of individual views on this transition from key stakeholder represented by leaders in industry and science. The workshop serves as a forum on the existing OGF technical strategy roadmap. The main objective is the identification of challenges in standardization, research and adoption.
As Europe is a major player in Grid research and adoption, the workshop especially considers - but is not limited to - current European projects and companies. This is also seen as a starting point for closer linkage of national and pan-European concertation work under the OGF umbrella for future regional European OGF activity. The goal is a better understanding of the ongoing activities and the stipulation of stronger involvement in the OGF work.
The workshop is organized by CoreGRID (http://www.coregrid.eu/), the European Network of Excellence on Foundations, Software Infrastructures and Applications for large scale distributed, GRID and Peer-to-Peer Technologies. CoreGRID aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies. To achieve this objective, the Network brings together a critical mass of well-established researchers from 41 European institutions. Through its members, CoreGRID has strong links to OGF and many European and National Grid projects. CoreGRID is committed to OGF standards activities which is also reflected in CoreGRID’s continuing OGF sponsorship support.
