Grids Mean Business: Software Licensing - A Way Forward?

This session will address the thorny issue of Software Licensing and the constraints placed upon business users by proprietary software suppliers. Grid Computing Now! has been working with The 451 Group and David Wallom, University of Oxford, to research users issues and requirements with a view to sponsoring a structured discussion between the users and suppliers in a roundtable format at the OGC 20 Grids Mean Business track. The emphasis will be on identifying practical ways forwards, based on the set of user needs which has been captured.
We will invite a number of leading users and encourage them to state their concerns about the current licensing regimes they endure. Then ask for their suggestions as to how they see the way forwards. We will then invite some leading software vendors to respond, with due notice and preparation time, and join the discussion. Then we will open up the discussion for the interest of other users, vendors and standards experts. An outcome of this session may well be an agreement to investigate some open specification work on aspects of software usage tracking.
