We present our work on using Web 2.0 to build a social networking portal for researchers at Minority Serving Institutions. The key feature of our work is to use social bookmarking and tagging as a means for building up user profiles that can be subsequently searched and used for matchmaking, enabling users to identify others with complementary research interests. We describe our system architecture and provide a survey and comparison of various Web 2.0 tools for building rich client interfaces and backend services for managing bookmarks.
