Understanding Grid in the Distributed Computing Landscape
(90 mins)
Cheryl Doninger and Robert Fogel
View Participants
In today's global economy, organizations are being challenged to break down process, technology and people silos that inhibit the flow of information, innovation and commerce. Individuals are being challenged to work in new ways - often in collaboration with other organizations, departments, and/or disciplines. This session will explore why Grid is the IT infrastructure solution being used by leading organizations around the world to enable this knowledge-based, global economy. It will explain the role of grid technologies within the broader distributed computing landscape and define the three common categories of grid use today. It will identify the evolution of Grid technologies from application-specific solutions to dynamic, shared and service-oriented infrastructures.
Presentations:
The Role of Grid in the IT Landscape
Robert Fogel
Intel Corp., World Ahead Program, Principal Education Architect,
OGF Vice-President
Enterprise IT continues to focus on lower cost of operation, increased operational efficiency, energy efficiency, and improved delivery of business value. Virtualization has struck a loud chord with IT as an important means to drive this focus. Grid extends the familiar concept of virtualization to achieve new levels of optimization, interoperability and business value creation that further drives this same focus though increased utilization of IT assets, the breaking-down of silos and the federation of data and infrastructure. This session addresses how Grid and virtualization work together in the IT datacenter and beyond.
“Enterprise: Extending Grid Beyond High Performance Computing (HPC)
Cheryl Doninger
SAS, R&D Director
OGF Area Director
Enterprises are extending grid beyond HPC and now beginning to use it as the basis for IT infrastructure that manages workload and service levels across multiple business units and the Enterprise as a whole. SAS, as an ISV that provides Business Intelligence and Enterprise critical software solutions, delivers solutions that provide performance, manageability and conformance to the standards and policy requirements of IT by leveraging grid infrastructure. In this session, we will discuss the various stages of grid implementation across a variety of industry segments as well as the common categories of grid use in the Enterprise today. We will also see how grid can help bridge the gap between central IT and the business users.
Case Study - "Vertical service-oriented solutions supporting industrial inter-enterprise collaboration"
Mike Boniface
IT Innovation Centre, Manager
Inter-enterprise service-oriented collaboration has now been demonstrated to provide significant business value in many industrial sectors. Companies are now adopting Grid and service-oriented technologies in real-world pilot applications to support a wide range of collaboration models such as virtual organisations and extended supply chains. These technologies will provide the building blocks for the market-based service economy that will emerge over the next few years. This presentation explores case studies from important economic sectors to show how service-oriented infrastructures, combined with existing domain and general purpose enterprise solutions, can provide vertical solutions for collaborative product design in industry. The technical solutions are presented and how differences in product development lifecycles can impact technology choices and barriers to adoption. The presentation shows that these barriers are now largely solved technically and what remains is for some stakeholders to adapt their business models and operating policies to the changing market conditions and increasing demand from customers for extended enterprise support.
