Grids in the IT Data Center (90 mins)

View Participants

IT managers, and the data centers they maintain, are increasing challenged to satisfy agility and flexibility business requirements being driven by our ever more competitive and global economy. Grids and grid-like technologies enable an IT organization to be responsive to quickly changing business requirements and to optimize the ROI of their centrally controlled infrastructure. However, the deployment of a dynamic data center grid infrastructure introduces new management challenges to an organization. Processes and tools that organizations may have implemented to deploy, configure and manage a smaller number of larger, statically configured/siloed application specific servers will not meet the ongoing management needs of servers deployed in a shared grid infrastructure.

Many organizations have been forced to build proprietary, home grown solutions to create a management infrastructure that works for their individual environment. Many of these same organizations would like to move to commercial software solutions, however, there is a lack of standards that define how the various layers of the Grid stack can interoperate to provide a cohesive management environment. This session will provide an overview of data center grid technologies and approaches, provide data center grid case studies, and frame some current issues/limitations and how they can be addressed in future.

Presentations:

“Grids in the Data Center
Nick Werstiuk
Platform Computing, Product Manager - Strategic Planning
OGF Area Director

The objective of this presentation is to provide and overview of use and applicability of Grids in the Data Center. The presentation will cover the following areas
• Grids in the Data Center Definition - where and why are people using them today, what are the key components in the infrastructure.
• Grids in the Data Center Challenges - what are the problems organizations face in building this infrastructure
• OGF Activities - what activities are underway within the OGF to assist the community.

“Databases in the IT Data Center Grid
Bob Thome
Oracle, Director of Product Management

Databases are core components of any data center. They are the persistent storage repository for most data center applications, and store an enterprise's most critical business data. While many modern applications naturally adapt to a grid environment, databases, because of their design and stringent requirements, require special technology and architectures. This session will examine techniques for running an enterprise class database in a data center grid, including key challenges to realizing the benefits of agility and flexibility that grids can provide. Looking to the future, the session will discuss looming unsolved challenges, and the role standards will provide. It will conclude with some case studies detailing example customers running databases on a data center grid.

Case Study – “Using the Lustre Filesystem across the Wide Area Network
Stephen Simms
Indiana University, Manager, Data Capacitor Project

Grid computing allows users to harness the power of distributed heterogeneous resources to help solve difficult scientific problems. We have used the Indiana University Data Capacitor, a 535 TB Lustre filesystem for the temporary storage of large data sets, to provide resources separated by distance with a common filesystem. We have measured exceptional transfer rates to the filesystem and in some cases the measurements have exceeded 80% of the theoretical maximum. In this session we will discuss our experiences with Lustre across the WAN, the performance we have measured, and the methods we have used to achieve that performance. We will discuss the projects we are supporting with Lustre across the WAN and the future directions that our research may take. Finally, we will invite questions from and discussion with session attendees.
