Grids and Server Virtualization (90 mins)
Cheryl Doninger and Ravi Subramaniam
View Participants

Server virtualization is becoming increasingly popular in data centers around the world as organizations consolidate and then re-architect their IT infrastructure to improve utilization and overall flexibility. As the server virtualization industry expands and changes, the way many vendors are defining virtualization is beginning to sound very similar to grid computing. Its no wonder than that many people within the IT industry are confused by where virtualization ends and grid computing begins. This session will define how Grid compliments and extends server virtualization by pooling virtual and physical (non-virtualized) server resources across a wide range of operating systems and platforms controlled and managed as a common resource.

Presentations:

“Virtualization and Grids: What’s Next?
J.S. Hurley, PhD,
The Boeing Company, Sr. Manager, Distributed Software and Systems Integration
OGF Advisory Committee

Recent advancements in Grid technologies have enabled organizations to share and manage their resources beyond the earlier expectations of IT and user groups. The growth and evolution of Virtualization has enabled organizations to consolidate resources, especially in DataCenter domains producing in some cases quite noticeable cost savings. As we continue to see improvements in processing, networking, information management technologies and middleware, the relationships and roles between Grids and Virtualization become increasingly blurred. In this presentation, we will discuss possibilities of convergence between the two technological areas and possibilities for the future.

"The Siamese Twins of IT Infrastructure - Grids and Virtualization"
Ravi Subramaniam
Intel Corp., Principal Engineer
OGF Area Director

Grids and virtualization (as in machine virtualization) can be complementary and overlapping in how they address key computational infrastructure use and management. With the increased interest in machine virtualization, it is important to understand the perspectives that each of these paradigms bring to solve infrastructure problems/usages - so as to identify synergies and possibilities for standardization. In this talk, (some) virtualization models will be discussed and how Grids and machine virtualization approach and/or implement them. The expectation is that audiences will better understand how the two are "joined at the middle" and mutually beneficial.

Case Study - “Enhancing Grid Environments with Server Virtualization
Roger Klorese
XenSource, Inc., Senior Director, Product and Solutions Marketing

This session will describe potential scenarios for the integration of server virtualization with existing Grid environments. Leading grid users are investigating, and deploying server virtualization into their grid infrastructure to enable rapid provisioning and configuration of their grid environment using virtual machines to quickly reconfigure the infrastructure based on workload demand. The use of VM's as a 'checkpoint and restart' capability to pre-empt and migrate running jobs between nodes on the grid will also be discussed.
