OGF-EU: Using IT to reduce Carbon Emissions and Delivering the Potential of Energy Efficient Computing (1/4) (90 mins)
Ian Osborne (Intellect), Maria Luisa Vargas (Telefonica), Laurent LeFevre (INRIA)

In the age of climate change the concept of Green IT is becoming a hot topic within the ICT industry and society as a whole, as we seek to minimise our energy consumption for economic, legal, business strategic reasons and social corporate image to our customers and maximise the benefits accruing to the end users of our services. This is also an area of interest to the Policy Maker with discussions emerging of potential regulation of Data Centres, and a new Code of Conduct aimed at data centre owners in the European Union. What are the standards implications from this? What are the metrics/tools to measure the energy efficiency (e.g. Power Usage Effectiveness – PUE, Data Centre Efficiency - DCE)? How might we better orchestrate the use of shared infrastructure to reflect energy policy decisions (e.g. what equipment is to be used for what task, where and at what time?) and the distribution of workloads based on the energy requirements and the established policies. This session is aimed at bringing more light to the subject, following an introduction workshop at OGF 23 in Barcelona and the launch of the new Code of Conduct in November.

This session is intended to be a call to action to the community to work in key areas of contribution allowing us to:- a) design more efficient infrastructures with minimal carbon impact; b) operate the infrastructures in line with energy policies which allow the user to orchestrate the most efficient use of their energy resources; c) identify areas where standards can be developed to incorporate the necessary functionality. We intend illustrating the case for change by reference to recent moves in the regulatory environment in Europe, notably the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres; as well as user case studies featuring advances in technologies which can assist in the efficient deployment of compute capability.

Agenda:

Session 1 of 4: Green IT and Energy Efficiency, case studies from Industry and Academia

Session Chair: Ian Osborne (Intellect)

17:30 Introduction, “Green IT and Distributed Computing
Ian Osborne (Intellect)

17:45 "Energy Efficiency issues for large scale distributed systems : the GREEN-NET initiative"
Laurent Lefevre (INRIA - University of Lyon)

The question of energy savings has been a matter of concern since a long time in the mobile distributed systems and battery-constrained systems.
However, for large-scale non-mobile distributed systems, which nowadays reach impressive sizes, the energy dimension (electrical consumption) just starts to be taken into account.
This talk will present some current researches on energy efficiency approaches with academic and industrial perspectives. This talk will describe the current activities done inside the INRIA GREEN-NET project dedicated to "Power aware software frameworks for high performance data transport and computing in large scale distributed systems". We show our analyze of the usage of an experimental grid over a long period. Based on this analysis, we will describe a resource reservation infrastructure which takes into account the energy issue. We will present our infrastructure on the large scale experimental Grid5000 platform and present the obtained gains in terms of energy.

Laurent Lefèvre obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in January 1997 at LIP Laboratory (Laboratoire Informatique du Parallelisme) in ENS-Lyon (Ecole Normale Superieure), France. From 1997 to 2001, he was assistant professor in computer science in Lyon 1 University and a member of the RESAM Laboratory (High Performance Networks and Multimedia Application Support Lab.) Since 2001, he is a permanent researcher in computer science at INRIA (the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control). He is a member of the RESO project team (High Performance Networks, Protocols and Services) from the LIP laboratory in Lyon, France. He has organized several conferences in high performance networking and computing and he is a member of several program committees. He has co-authored more than 50 papers published in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He is a member of IEEE and takes part in several research projects. His research interests include: grid and distributed computing and networking, power aware systems, green computing and networking, autonomic networking, fault tolerance, high performance networks protocols and services, active networks and services, disruption tolerant networking, cluster computing, distributed shared memory systems and data consistency.

18:05 "Enery efficiency in the Telecom sector"
Maria Luisa Vargas (Telefonica)

Telefónica I+D presents the current situation and 20/20 EU target on Carbon Emissions footprint and Energy Efficiency on ICT through the experience of Telefónica and its R&D prospective activities.

María Luisa Vargas received the M.S. degree in Telecommunications (1990) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 1990. She is head of project of the Division for Optical Network Provision at Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo, innovation company belonging to the Telefónica Group. Since she joined the company she has worked in specification, development and implantation of different projects related with transport networks management (creation, provision and operation), specifically in synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical fiber. She has published research articles in international refereed scientific journals.

18:30 Panel Discussion: “Do we believe that IT can be Green?

A panel session will immediately follow with previous session speakers, providing an interactive venue for further discussion.
