Cloud and Grid I: Innovation and Operations (90 mins)
Peter Coffee, Salesforce.com; Jamie Shiers, CERN

"Cloud Computing: More than a Virtual Stack" - Peter Coffee, Salesforce.com
Like "horseless carriage" and "wireless phone," many new technologies are
first considered in terms of their resemblance to what has come before --
but this often fails to reflect the truly transforming results of
innovation. Taking the horses away from a carriage does not create F1
racing; taking the wires away from a phone does not create mobile Internet
browsing with location-based social network applications. So it is with
cloud computing, sometimes seen as primarily a remote virtualization of the
local computing installations that came before. It's crucial to understand
the fundamentally new models of computation, collaboration, and process
performance that the cloud can enable. Peter Coffee of salesforce.com will
survey a number of substantially different approaches to the cloud and
illuminate the opportunities for building composite systems that combine
complementary strengths.

"Global Grid Operations - What it means for the LHC Grid and the HEP Community" - Jamie Shiers BSc, PhD, CERN
