XtreemFS - a distributed and replicated file system for grids and clouds (90 mins)

In this session, we present XtreemFS, a POSIX compatible file system for grid and cloud computing infrastructures. XtreemFS supports wide-area distribution and replication while offering users and applications the same interface and semantics as regular file systems like NFS. Existing applications don't need to be modified to use XtreemFS. The native XOSAGA adaptor provides full XtreemFS support for applications that use the SAGA API.

We give an overview of the XtreemFS features with a focus on the file replication. XtreemFS supports two replication modes. The read-only file replication is designed for efficient distribution of a large number of replicas, e.g. for data repositories or VM images. The full read/write replication gives users and applications enhanced data safety and locality with full POSIX semantics. Both replication modes are transparent to applications.

We'll give a short introduction to the design and features of XtreemFS followed by a demonstration of the replication with regular applications. In addition, we will demonstrate XtreemFS with the XOSAGA adapter. We'll use the XtreemOS public testbed for the demonstration of the wide-area replication. The XtreemOS testbed allows interested users to quickly use and test XtreemFS themselves without installing software.

Agenda:
- Design and features of XtreemFS
- Components and configuration of XtreemFS
- Demonstration of replication and automatic failover
- Demonstration of an application on top of a distributed XtreemFS installation
- (XO)SAGA with XtreemFS
- Details on Replication in XtreemFS
