Group Type: Working Group
| Group Description |
System virtualization breaks new grounds in isolation, consolidation, and migration of resources. In turn, Grids offer new paradigms for dissemination and aggregation of IT operations, often on a large scale. In this WG, we believe that system virtualization and Grids are complementary and highly synergistic in maximizing the yield of an IT infrastructure.

| Group Focus and Scope |
Specifically, this WG will endeavor:
(i) to verify that within existing Grid standards the request for systems with common capabilities might be satisfied by either physical systems, or by the infrastructure creating and managing virtual systems; (ii) to document use cases wherein the Grid infrastructure is seen participating in the lifecycle of a virtual system (as opposed to the virtual system being entirely handled within traditional off-line system management); (iii) to define one or more profiles that can be used by any Grid infrastructure. The following profiles are envisioned: Profile A: Get monitoring information from a virtual infrastructure management software. This includes both information about the virtual infrastructure itself as well as the underlying physical infrastructure Profile B: Manipulate the virtual infrastructure, e.g. increase memory, network bandwith, processing power, etc.) Profile C: Cause the suspend/resume of a virtual system; Profile D: Cause a virtual system to migrate from one location to another We anticipate that the proposed activities will have a liaison to the DMTF's System Virtualization, Partitioning, and Clustering (SVPC) working group and the OGF CDDLM group. |
