The Data Area groups develop standards for accessing, managing, and transporting
data on grids. At the lowest level we deal with the access and management of storage for structured (DAIS) and unstructured data (GSM). Standards for data transport
(GridFTP) and byte-level (Byte-I/O) file access are also provided. Higher level concertation of data movement and data naming standard are developed by the DMI and GFS working groups. The figure below exemplifies how the different standards interact on common use cases.
These groups are complemented by the DFDL effort aimed at defining a common data format description language and INFO-D defining an information dissemination protocol. The Digital Repositories Research Group examines commonalities in metadata handling and architectural concepts for digital repositories and how existing OGF standards can be exploited for them.
