Area Scope:
The Data Area groups explore the access, management and transport of data on grids.
Data Groups:
Data Access and Integration Services (DAIS-WG)
This group seeks to promote standards for the development of grid database services, focusing principally on providing consistent access to existing, autonomously managed databases. By focusing on services, the intention is to ease application development through the provision of comparable components, and to track developments in the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA).
Grid File Systems (GFS-WG)
Data in a grid can be of any format and stored in any type of storage systems. There can be many hundreds of petabytes of data in grids, among which a very large percentage is stored in files. A standard mechanism to describe and organize file-based data is essential for facilitating access to this large amount of data. The Grid File System Working Group (GFS-WG) will provide specifications of Grid File System Directory Services and Architecture of Grid File System Services.
Data Format Description Language (DFDL-WG)
The aim of this working group is to define an XML-based language, the Data Format Description Language (DFDL), for describing the structure of binary and character encoded (ASCII/Unicode) files and data streams so that their format, structure, and metadata can be exposed.
GridFTP-WG
This group focuses on improvements of FTP and GridFTP v1.0 protocol with the goal to produce bulk file transfer protocol suitable for grid applications. New protocols should be backward compatible with RFC959 FTP as much as possible with new features added as (negotiable) extensions. Some desired extensions are: parallel transfers, GSI authentication, and striped transfers.
Grid Storage Management (GSM-WG)
In this Working Group we will focus on the definition of the functionality of a standard SRM (Storage Resource Manager) interface. We define Storage Resource Managers (SRMs) as middleware components whose function is to provide dynamic space allocation and file management of shared storage components on the Grid. We see this as a short-term effort to have a workable interface that Grid projects could immediately make use of to resolve interoperability issues between storage systems.
Information Dissemination (INFOD-WG)
The purpose of this group is to develop a model for Information Dissemination (ID) that supports asynchronous data and event distribution, data replication and third-party data delivery in real-time environments.
Transaction Management (TM-RG)
The goal of this RG is to investigate how to apply transaction management (TM) techniques to Grid systems.
OGSA Data (OGSA-D-WG)
The scope of the OGSA Data working group is to produce an overall data architecture for OGSA. It will identify message patterns and interfaces that form part of that architecture, but will not define detailed specifications itself, leaving this for other groups.
Byte IO (ByteIO-WG)
The objective of the OGSA ByteIO working group is to define a minimal Web Service interface for this functionality. The WG will produce a use case informational document, a recommendation document and an experience document.
