[sem-grd] GGF Semantic Grid Research Group update
Hello, this message comes to you just after GGF10 in Berlin. I thought
I'd take the opportunity to update you on some of the activities of the
Semantic Grid Research Group (SEM-RG), especially as we have a few new
names on this mailing list.
I've distributed the Call for Papers for the Semantic Grid Applications
Workshop at GGF11, which I sent to this list earlier last week. The
workshop is focused on applications of Semantic Web technology to all
aspects of Grid computing and is being organized with the Applications
and Testbeds group. Please distribute the call to your colleagues, and
if anyone can suggest other community mailing lists please let me know.
I will also be sending it to specific other GGF groups to go out on
their lists, and the call will be visible on Grid Forge shortly (more
about Grid Forge below).
SEM-RG is also participating in workshops at WWW2004 and ECAI. The
deadline for the former has just passed and we'll update you when the
program is available. The deadline for the ECAI workshop is 19th April,
followed a week later by the deadline for the Hawaii workshop. While
the audiences at these two events will be quite different, I realize
that some of the speakers may be the same and I'm sorry these dates are
so close together! There was nothing we could do about this, but we
don't want it to be a problem and we will be as flexible as possible to
accommodate people who wish to submit papers to both events. Hawaii
will include invited talks as well as refereed papers and we welcome
suggestions for speakers.
As you know, I report Semantic Grid activities (both at GGF and elsewhere)
via the Semantic Grid community portal www.semanticgrid.org. GGF now has
its own mechanism for this, called Grid Forge (forge.gridforum.org) In
order to improve our visibility within GGF and our interaction with the
GGF community, I am going to publish our documents onto Grid Forge
routinely. Currently the only document on there is the Proceedings of
the GGF9 Semantic Grid Workshop (a 79 page Word doc) - I'll put the CFP
for the GGF11 workshop up next week.
I encourage you to use Grid Forge to see what's going on in GGF. Since
the documents will be public, you will not need any special authorization
to get at them - but we can also use it to help create documents
collaboratively, in which case those involved will need to be members of
the Semantic Grid "project". This is achieved by creating your Grid Forge
login then requesting membership, which the chairs of the group can grant.
As you know from GGF9, Carole is working on the creation of the Semantic
Grid Primer. Thanks to those of you helping with that - I'll leave
Carole to update you on this separately.
Other news from GGF10. The proposed Metadata Management Group has held
BOFs at two GGFs. Their vision is synergistic with ours and they are
proposing to produce "use cases", which would be a valuable contribution
to our activities. We look forward to working with them - the exact
relationship has yet to be finalized. Also, our group is in the
Architecture Area and this was the responsibility of Bill Johnston, and
he has now handed over to Dave Snelling. I'm hugely grateful to Bill
for all his support in setting the group up and for participating
personally in it, and I look forward to working with Dave in the future.
Finally, our secretary, Bruce Barkstrom, is moving on and I'd like
to thank him for doing a splendid job. We've had some preliminary
discussions about a new secretary and of course we always welcome
volunteers who are able to help with the leadership of this group.
All for now. I look forward to seeing you in Hawaii!
-- Dave
