[sem-grd] Job Opportunities to work on OntoGrid
Building the Semantic Grid
OntoGrid <http://www.ontogrid.net> is an EU IST FP6 STREP of 8 partners
funded under the Complex Problem Solving on the Grid programme. The
project has already kicked-off and runs through until October 2007.
OntoGrid seeks to unite Grid engineers with knowledge engineers to
research and build the foundations of the Semantic Grid by making
Knowledge services Grid compliant and Grid aware, and by making Grid
services Knowledge aware. The aim is to develop a reference
architecture for the Semantic Grid and to pilot prototypes of the
architecture with case studies drawn from satellite data processing and
trans-national insurance settlement.
The University of Manchester, School of Computer Science leads the
technical direction of the project and has two posts availab
Applications are invited for a Grid Engineer and Software Engineer to
join the e-Science North West (ESNW) Centre. Both posts are available
as early as possible. The Grid Engineer post is available for a period
of 32 months and the Software Engineer post is available for a period
of 16 months. The Software Engineer will be responsible for developing
services and service architecture providing access to resources on a
grid. The Grid Engineer will be responsible for overseeing this
development. Starting salary will be in the range £27,116 to £35,883
per annum for the Grid Engineer. The starting salary for the Software
Engineer will be £27,116 to £30,363 per annum. Applicants should have
a good honors degree or equivalent in Computer Science or
Computation. The successful candidates will have a proven track record
of expertise in software deployment and development, an in-depth
knowledge of Grid Computing and/or web services and be able to
demonstrate experience in programming on multiple operating
systems. Both positions are associated with the European IST funded
project OntoGrid <http://www.ontogrid.net>.
Grid Engineer (REF 1132/04):
The Grid Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the development
of services and a service architecture which provides access to
resources on a grid (computing, networking, data storage, multi-media
streams). S/he will work with other software engineers who are
developing tools to describe the semantics of information processing
facilities (e.g. computers, data storage devices). The Manchester
work will be coordinated with the work of the other partners, and the
post-holder will be particularly concerned with advising on the
appropriate services and service hosting environments based around
developing standards in Grid middleware and Web Services. S/he will
contribute to the process of creating these standards via input from
the experiences of OntoGrid in collaboration with other European Union
Grid projects.
We are seeking a person with significant experience in Grid middleware
(e.g. Globus, Unicore, Condor) or in Web Services (.NET, J2EE,
Apache/Axis) -- preferably in both. The successful candidate will
work with other project partners as part of a large, distributed
team. The post will involve a substantial amount of travel to project
meetings across Europe and to major international conferences. Good
communication skills are essential as the successful candidate will be
expected to participate in the dissemination of the project findings
both within and without the project.
Software Engineer (REF 1133/04)
The Software Engineer will be responsible for developing the services
and service architecture which provides access to resources on a grid
(computing, networking, data storage, multi-media streams). S/he will
work with two other software engineers who are developing tools to
describe the semantics of the information processing facilities
(e.g. computers, data storage devices). The Manchester work will be
coordinated with the work of the other partners, and the post-holder
will be particularly concerned with advising on the appropriate
services and service hosting environments based around developing
standards in Grid middleware and Web Services. S/he will contribute to
the process of creating these standards via input from the experiences
of OntoGrid in collaboration with other European Union Grid projects.
We are seeking a person with experience in either Grid middleware
(e.g. Globus, Unicore, Condor) or in Web Services (.NET, J2EE,
Apache/Axis), or preferably in both. A high level of skill in
objectoriented programming on different operating systems is
required. S/he will need to work with other project partners as part
of a flexible and creative team. The post will involve a substantial
amount of travel to project meetings across Europe and to major
international conferences.
