Critical Interoperability Issues Addressed by OGF Specification Implementations
Supercomputing 2007 Conference -- RENO, NV., Nov. 12, 2007 - The Open Grid Forum (OGF) today announced interoperability demonstrations of ten OGF Grid standards and standards-in-development will take place at the Supercomputing 2007 (SC07) conference. Demonstration participants, who are members and technical contributors to OGF, are exhibiting implementations in open-source and commercial software products. This represents a significant new phase for grid technology and the OGF - moving from the creation of standards to demonstrating interoperability and adoption in science and business.
Among other things, these demonstrations show how OGF standards address critical interoperability issues such as scheduling jobs across multiple application platforms; describing and accessing distributed data such as databases, files, or XML repositories; managing the deployment of various applications in a distributed environment; and providing a uniform API for grid-enabling applications.
The work of OGF being demonstrated includes the High Performance Computing Profile (HPCP) which includes Basic Execution Service (BES) and Job Submission Description Language (JSDL), Grid Storage Management (GSM), Grid Remote Procedure Call (GridRPC), Simple API for Grid Applications (SAGA), Grid Information Retrieval (GIR), Resource Namespace Service (RNS), Grid File Transfer Protocol2 (FTP), Information Dissemination (INFOD), Network Mark-up Language (NML) and Network Measurements (NM).
"Interoperability is critical to harnessing the capabilities of grids to enable scientific discovery and business advantage for organizations of all sizes" said Craig Lee, president of the OGF. "These demonstrations illustrate the progress being made by OGF and our members to produce standards that enable customer choice of interoperable solutions - accelerating adoption and expanding market opportunities."
Several demonstrations will take place under the auspices of OGFs Grid Interoperation Now (GIN) group which coordinates efforts among major production Grids including TeraGrid, EGEE, NAREGI, NorduGrid, Open Science Grid, Pragma, DEISA, UK National Grid Service, and APAC. Numerous organizations will be participating in the demonstrations including Altair Engineering, EGEE, Forschungszentrum Julich, Hungarian Grid Competence Centre, IBM, INFN, Internet2, KISTI, KnowARC, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, OMII-UK, OMII-Europe, Microsoft, NIC, Platform Computing, UK e-Science, University of Tsukuba and University of Virginia eScience Group.
